Obituary for Layton C."Cupp" Thrower
Thrower, Layton C. “Cupp”, 75, Portage entered into new life May 10, 2021 at UPMC Altoona. Born February 4, 1946 in Johnstown the son of Layton S. and Margaret (Turner) Thrower. Preceded in death by his parents, daughter in law Nikki Thrower and in laws Joseph and Julia Zaher, Ron Zaher and Douglas Zaher. Survived by his wife of 53 years the former Lorraine Zaher, and sons: Eric of Portage; and Greg married to the former Cathy Ball of Portage. Grandchildren: Kayla, Nicholas, Erika, Ian and Abby. Brother of Peg Diehl and Gail Simala. Member of Holy Family Parish. Cupp loved spending time with his grand children, he was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Member of the Portage Area High School Class of 1964. He was an Army Veteran serving in Vietnam. Was employed by Beth Mines for a number of years and retired as a Corrections Officer for Cambria County Prison. He also served his community as a member and past president of Portage Area Ambulance Association Board of Directors where he was also an EMT-P. He was a Labor Commissioner for the UMWA District 2. He will be sadly missed by the “gang of friends”. Friends received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home, Portage where service will be held at 11 AM Thursday. Due to the Feast of the Ascension Holy Day a memorial mass will be held at a later date. Covid-19 restrictions are still in place, mask are required and social distancing practiced at the funeral home. Committal St. Mary’s Cemetery , Portage. Military grave side rites by the members of the Portage Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers family requests contributions to Crichton-McCormick Park
