Vera was a graduate of Central Cambria High School. Known most of her life as Louise, Vera lived a very simple
but full life. She always lived on a farm. She milked the cows, fed the pigs, and butchered many chickens in her
time. After high school, Louise worked at the bakery in Ebensburg until she and Major married. They enjoyed
square dancing, polka dancing, and playing Pinochle. Louise put her baking experience to good use and made
beautiful wedding cakes for about a decade of her life.
Louise was the manager at Red's Bar-B-Que in Portage for 25+ years. It was here she used her love for cooking
making the majority of the food from scratch. She was best known for her special recipe for Reds hand-breaded
wings.
Louise was able to teach her kids and grandkids so much throughout their lives. If you knew Louise you knew
how hard of a worker she was and taught us all to be as well. Some of the most important things we took away
from her were working hard for what you want and never give up, homemade always tastes better, laugh at
your mistakes, it's never too late to change, and live your life for you and not anyone else. She always made
sure her family was taken care of whether it be Sunday dinners, fresh beef or pork, and plenty of vegetables to
can from the garden.
Later in life Louise's health declined and she enjoyed word search puzzles but mostly enjoyed seeing her family.
The latest was the celebration of her 90th birthday at the end of November, 2021. She could have cared less
about eating but just sat and admired her family.
Louise is a long-time member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Sidman. Viewing will be Monday, May 2,
2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home in Portage. Viewing at the church will also be
from 12 noon to time of service 1:00 p.m. 0n Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Mt. Olive UM Church with Pastor Tom
Moore officiating. Interment at Forest Lawn chapel immediately after service.
We would like to thank the staff of the Doerr Wing at Arbutus for the care and compassion shown to Louise over the last three years. These people became like a second family and she loved them all. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mt. Olive United Methodist Church.
