Obituary for Raymond "Buckwheat" Sossong

Sossong, Raymond, “Buckwheat”, 84, went to his eternal rest October 26, 2024. Born February 1,1940, in Portage the son of Anthony and Gertrude (Enderlein) Sossong. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ken, Ron and sister Agnes Nolan, brothers in law R.D. Davis, Bill Bickleman, sisters in law Gerry Sossong and Lita Sossong. Survived by his wife Vicki (Berkheimer) Sossong ending a 60 year marriage, and children: Yvonne (Bob) Perich; Ray; Kevin (Val); and Wanda (Kirk) Bearjar. Brother of Tony, Tom, Bob, Shirley Davis, and Kate Bickelman. Also surviving is his brother in law Dates Nolan.  Graduated from Portage High School and served in the 104th Armored Calvary receiving an honorable discharge from the National Guard. He was employed at Leman Machine Shop, Bethlehem Mine 33 and retired from Reitz coal Co. at Central City in1999. He loved his “Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco” farm. He enjoyed sports, hunting and riding his John Deere lawnmower. He was loved by his grandchildren and great grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews. Deepest gratitude to his “angels” Carolyn and Jen from Conemaugh Regional Hospice and Dr. Donald Ratchford. Friends received from 2-8 Pm Friday November 1, 2024 at the Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home, Portage. Funeral Mass 11 AM Saturday, November 2, 2024 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Wilmore, PA, Committal church cemetery. Military graveside rites by the Portage Ritual Team.
