Obituary for John B. "Ben" Adams
John (Ben) Adams - 77 of Ebensburg, PA (formerly of Richland and Portage) passed peacefully in his sleep on October 16, 2019. Ben served as the Portage Borough Tax Collector, owned an accounting practice, opened the Mustang Corral, and operated several carwashes. Ben loved his home town of Portage and actively participated in many community projects such as the Crichton McCormick Park, Jaycees, Summerfest, and is a charter member of the Portage Endowment Fund. Ben and his son, Ryan, personally planted many of the trees that line Portage’s Main Street.
Ben is preceded in death by his parents Robert “Clair” and Eunola (Lysinger) Adams, his brother Clair Adams, his sisters Marie Bozich and Gloria Tewart, and his mother-in-law Betty Gordon. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Janet (Gordon) Adams; his four children Robert (Sallie) Adams of Moon Twp, PA, Robyn Adams of New Cumberland, PA, Rebecca (John) Jordan of Leesburg, VA, and Ryan (Carol) Adams of Johnstown, PA; six grandchildren Shannon (Ben) Schultz; Ryan Jr. and Jacob Adams; Johnny III, Madison, and Sarah Jordan; his siblings Chuck Adams, Nola Jean Fletcher, and Herbert Adams; and his father-n-law, Rev. Thomas Gordon.
Viewing will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home in Portage on Sunday October 20, 2019 and the funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Monday October 21, 2019 at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Caldwell, Ave of Portage, Pastor Arthur Black, officiant. A celebration of Ben’s life will immediately follow at the Crimson Room – 106 Munster Road in Portage. All family and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Portage Endowment, care of Community Foundation for the Alleghenies at 216 Franklin Street, Suite 400, Johnstown, PA 15901 . The purpose of this fund is to support non-profit activity and civic improvement projects that benefit the residents of Portage and the surrounding area.
