Obituary for Delores Hollop
Hollop, Delores (Smilnak), 79, Portage, entered into new life July 13, 2017. Born January 23, 1938 in Lilly the daughter of John and Mary (Zurilla) Smilnak. Preceded in death by her parents, husband John, son John Michael, brothers, John, Michael, Andrew and George; and sisters Frances George and Agnes Lescznske. Survived by her children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Sister of Helen Semetana of Puritan. On the "Can You Imagine" page in her Lilly High School yearbook, the entry reads: "Can you imagine Delores not going steady?" Pert, pretty and popular Delores and her beau Johnny L. were an item then, but circumstances intervened and their relationship failed to flourish. In time love led to marriage when tall, handsome John Hollop courted Delores. During their married life of 23 years, five children were born, Brenda (Raymond) Egnot who lives in Johnstown, Loretta Bradley, John (deceased), Christopher, and Mary Kay (Larry) Summerville, all of Portage. Widowed at 43, Delores devoted her life to parenting as a single mom of four teenagers and a seven year old, all while working as a seamstress for several garment manufacturers. The children grew into adulthood and Delores eventually retired. She was a devoted grandmother to Alex and Nicholas. She enjoyed polka music, especially the music of Eddie Blazonczyk. Recently she received a phone call from widower John Lassak of Akron, OH, her high school beau, who persisted in renewing their friendship. This time, cancer, not circumstances of war and distance, has separated them. As was her style, Delores endured her illness with grace and fortitude. She faced the challenges of her life and illness with faith and determination and would want to be remembered for her joy of living. Friends received from 2-8 PM Sunday at the Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home, Portage where Parastas will be sung at 7 PM. Panacheida will be sung at 9:30 Monday at the funeral home followed by Funeral Liturgy 10 AM Monday at Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Portage. Fr. James Spontak celebrant. Interment church cemetery
